These three printers cost anywhere from under £600 to around £5,000, and most of that difference comes down to one thing: how the image gets onto the card.
We compared each one on five criteria: upfront price, print technology, security features, cost per card and fit by sector.
The printhead transfers dye from the ribbon straight onto the PVC card. It's fast and affordable to buy and run, and ideal for standard staff badges and visitor passes.
Entrust Sigma DSE · Zebra ZC100
The image is printed onto a clear film first, then fused to the card. The result is true over-the-edge colour, a tougher surface, and flawless prints on uneven smart and contactless cards.

The Sigma DSE is built for today's digital and cloud-based environments, and it brings Entrust's security-first design down to the lowest price point in this guide. Setup is quick, and a mobile-accessible dashboard shows real-time status, supply levels, cleaning prompts and firmware updates, so non-technical staff can run it.
The DSE sits at the entry point of the professional market. It costs well under the ZC100 but shares the security architecture of Entrust's higher-end Sigma range. That makes it the natural choice for organisations issuing a few hundred cards a year that still have to satisfy an IT or data-protection review, such as schools, GP surgeries, clinics and smaller public-sector offices.
Single sided · Direct-to-card · USB · ZC11-0000000EM00
The ZC100 is the entry point to Zebra's ZC series. Its slim, compact body fits on a reception desk, and it has the reliability, driver support and consumable availability that make Zebra the default choice for many IT and facilities teams. If you need to print dual sided later, the ZC300 uses the same ribbons.
The ZC100 sits in the middle of the market. Over the DSE, you're paying for the Zebra name, a 3-year warranty and a mature ecosystem. It suits businesses that print regularly but not in bulk: corporate offices, gyms and leisure centres issuing membership cards, retailers running loyalty schemes, and event teams printing passes on site. It's also a safe pick for teams that work on Macs.

The K30D is a professional-grade retransfer printer. It prints onto a clear film and then bonds that film to the card, which gives true over-the-edge colour and flawless coverage, even on the uneven surfaces of smart and contactless cards. It prints both sides in a single pass, leaving room for barcodes, QR codes, terms and security features on the reverse.
The K30D is in a different league from the other two. Retransfer printers are what government departments, universities, NHS trusts and access-control integrators buy when a card has to last for years, resist tampering and carry an embedded chip. It costs several times more than the direct-to-card models, so buyers justify it on volume, card lifespan and security rather than on convenience.

FAQ
No. All prices are shown ex. VAT, in line with the rest of our store, and they update automatically when our pricing changes.
On colour ribbon cost alone, the Entrust Sigma DSE works out at around £0.16 per card, the Zebra ZC100 at around £0.18, and the SwiftPro K30D at around £0.57, because retransfer also uses film. The K30D's higher cost buys a more durable, over-the-edge finish.
All three can print on pre-encoded cards, but retransfer printers like the SwiftPro K30D handle the uneven surface of chip and antenna cards far better. The K30D and Sigma DSE also offer optional encoders, so you can program the chip during printing.
Most staff and visitor badges only need a single sided print. Choose dual sided if you want barcodes, QR codes, emergency contacts or terms and conditions on the back. Dual sided versions of the DSE and the ZC300 are available if you prefer direct-to-card.
You'll need a compatible ribbon, blank PVC cards and ID card design software. Card holders or lanyards finish the badge. Our team can put together a starter bundle for whichever printer you choose.
